Table of Contents
1. Rarity Tiers & Colors
Every fish in PC FISH is assigned a rarity tier that determines its base currency generation, breeding potential, and Steam Market value. The five tiers are color-coded for quick identification:
Common
Starter species. Easy to acquire, low income, but essential as breeding stock. Examples: Sapphire Chromis, Frostblue Sunfish.
Uncommon
Slightly harder to find. Decent passive income and a key stepping stone to Rare breeding. Example: Banggai Starfin.
Rare
Notable species with good income. Often the result of Common+Uncommon breeding. Example: Golden Butterflyfish.
Legendary
Very rare, high income. Requires Rare+Rare breeding with high affinity. Valuable on Steam Market.
Mythic
The pinnacle. Extremely rare, maximum income, top market value. Only from Legendary+Legendary with max affinity.
2. Star Rating System
Within each rarity tier, fish have a 1 to 5 star rating. Stars affect how much currency a fish generates and influence breeding outcomes. A 5-star Common fish can out-earn a 1-star Uncommon, so don't dismiss low-rarity fish with high stars.
- ★★★★★5-star: Maximum income within rarity, best breeding parent.
- ★★★★☆4-star: Excellent income, solid breeder.
- ★★★☆☆3-star: Average, typical for newly acquired fish.
- ★★☆☆☆2-star: Below average, consider merging or selling.
- ★☆☆☆☆1-star: Lowest income, use for merge fodder or market sale.
Tip: Breeding two high-star parents significantly increases the chance of high-star offspring. Prioritize 4-5 star fish as breeding stock.
3. Variant System Explained
Each fish species has multiple visual variants — different color patterns, fin shapes, or markings. The fish detail panel shows your variant completion as a percentage (e.g., "Variant: 40%"). Discovering all variants of a species contributes to the Variant Mastery achievement.
Variants are primarily unlocked through breeding. When you breed two fish, the offspring may be a previously unseen variant of one of the parent species. Higher star ratings and affinity improve the odds of discovering new variants.
Variant Progress Tips
- • Check the Collect encyclopedia to see which species have incomplete variant sets.
- • Breed the same species pair repeatedly — each attempt rolls for a new variant.
- • Cross-species breeding can also reveal variants of either parent species.
- • Some variants may only appear from specific rarity combinations.
4. Notable Fish Species
Based on in-game screenshots and community reports, here are some fish species you'll encounter:
Sapphire Chromis
CommonA blue-colored starter fish. Typically found at 3-star with 2/2 breeding count and ~40% variant completion. Great early breeding stock.
Frostblue Sunfish
CommonA light blue Common species. When paired with Banggai Starfin (Uncommon), can produce the Rare Golden Butterflyfish.
Banggai Starfin
UncommonAn Uncommon species valued as a breeding partner. Pairs well with Frostblue Sunfish for Rare offspring.
Golden Butterflyfish
RareA golden Rare species produced from Common+Uncommon breeding. A milestone for new breeders and a solid income fish.
5. Collection Strategy
Efficient collection requires balancing breeding, aquarium space, and trading. Follow this progression:
- 1
Phase 1: Common coverage
Acquire and breed all Common species. Fill your encyclopedia base and build up star ratings.
- 2
Phase 2: Uncommon & Rare
Use high-star Common pairs to produce Uncommon, then cross-breed for Rare. Track variant completion.
- 3
Phase 3: Legendary stock
Breed Rare+Rare with max affinity to build a roster of Legendary fish. Keep at least two of each.
- 4
Phase 4: Mythic hunting
Use Legendary pairs for Mythic attempts. This is the long-term endgame collection goal.
6. Merge System
When you have duplicate fish taking up aquarium space, use the Merge system to combine them. Merging frees up slots and can improve the resulting fish's star rating. The game tracks merge counts with achievements at 1, 10, and 100 merges.
Tip: Merge low-star duplicates rather than selling them. A merged fish may have a higher star rating than either parent, making it a better breeder or income source.
